Yesterday on 9th March 2013, Mumbai’s eastern harbor,
Sewree Jetty was thronged by hundreds of bird lovers from across all parts of
Mumbai , to witness the spectacle of pink feathered birds. The festival was
organized by Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS).It is estimated that at
least 10000 nos. both Greater and Lesser Flamingos have taken
shelter on these mudflats in quest for food and survival.
But the conservationist feel that this spectacle may not
last long, if the urban development authority and environ ministry does not pay
any heed to the urgency of preserving the mudflats and mangroves.
Due to persistent pounding of garbage and debris dump
along the vast stretches of mangroves along the city’s coastal line can
permanently damage the habitat of these birds.
The biggest threat to this habitat is the proposed Sewree
Nhava Seva Trans-harbor link , which is proposed to cut through these mudflats
which will permanently damage these habitats, the experts feel that if the sea
link is shifted little away from these mangroves it will save the environment.
I went there in the late afternoon , as I wanted to stay
till the sunset to shoot some images at the golden hour also.
THE ‘ X ‘ FACTOR :
The image of 2 flamingos making the “X” figure of their neck I got after a
long wait , when I observed that these two flamingos were busy in their work
and slowly approaching each other I visualized that at one point they will form
a “X” figure of their long necks. After a while the exact moment arrived , I
clicked the image and I got the “X” factor,
it was a matter of just few seconds before the figure got disturbed.
That Magnificent bird as a flying Machine.
Following are the set of 6 frames of the Flamingo
taking off and is airborne , it resembles like a jet plane taking off on a
runway.
